The Seeds Are Ours!

Why Breed Plants?

There are lots of reasons to breed plants too. For example:

  • it can produce plants with the specific characteristics that we as local gardeners want, rather than the generic characteristics that the seed companies give us
  • it can help augment the genetic diversity of the food crops upon which we all ultimately depend
  • it improves local self-reliance
  • it helps gardeners learn more about the plants they raise, and about scientific principles
  • and, yes, it’s fun
